Springtime is here!
The weekly mowing has begun again, so be sure to keep your items out of the common areas. Exercise equipment, bikes, grills, hoses, etc. must be entirely on your porch and not into the area where the association mows. Remember that pets cannot be tied outside unattended, so remove those dog leash tie-outs as well.
Speaking of dogs, we get weekly e-mails and calls begging for us to remind people to pick up after their pets. Reminders are not needed- people know they are supposed to do it. They're not forgetting- they're specifically ignoring the rule. So if you see someone ignoring this Wake County Animal Control ordinance, contact us with their name or address so we can begin the fine process. The cost is $100 per day for non-compliance, so if you're the one thinking folks aren't looking- believe us, they are! The HOA has many convenient pet waste stations for your use.
Enjoy the nice weather before the heat gets here!

New monument installed!
The monument is up! Thank you for your patience. The next step is landscaping around the monument. This monument will help visitors find the neighborhood, and will help set us apart from the apartments across the street. This is another project the Board has undertaken to add value to the homes in the neighborhood. We hope you enjoy it!
Assessment reminder
2012 assessments are $105 per month, due the first day of the month. If still unpaid after a 30-day grace period, a late fee is applied.
2013 assessments will be $110 per month as discussed at the 2011 annual meeting and as stated in the meeting notice.

Termite Warranty
If your unit was not inspected due to a locked or inaccessible storage room door, please call Kil-Mor Pest (919-479-1412) immediately to reschedule. Should your unit not be inspected by April 15, you will be called to a due process hearing with the Board where fines are applied for non-compliance. The rationale behind the strict enforcement of this rule is that one unit that is not inspected can void the termite bond (warranty) for the entire building. Thank you!

Gutter guards
As of October 1, all homes in Westhaven will have Leaf Defier gutter guards. This project began with the Board in 2008 researching all different types, styles, and brands of gutter guards and beginning to install them three to four buildings at a time. We began with the buildings that had the most trees near them and have now worked up to where the final homes are being completed the last week of September.
The photo to the right shows a diagram of the product and how it works. The photos below show what they look like when they're installed, and the video below that shows a demonstration. This project will save the association money on gutter cleaning and the repairs associated with clogged gutters, which helps you because the association is funded through your dues. We hope you enjoy the new product, and as always, if there are any issues, please contact us to let us know. Thank you.
Those of you selling your home will want to notify your realtors and potential homebuyers about this added benefit to living in Westhaven!

Report Street Light Outages
If you want to report a street light that is out, flickering, on during the day, or otherwise malfunctioning, they can be reported directly to the Town of Apex, who is responsible for repair, at 249-3427. They require the numbers off of the side of the poles and the address nearest to the pole. As they repair the poles during the day, this allows them to identify the affected pole. Alternately, if you provide PPM with the pole numbers of the affected lights and the nearest street address, they will call that in for you.
Landscape Project - Before and After
AFTER: The Bermuda can better handle the direct sun and the lack of irrigation.
Landscaping Improvements
Beginning Thursday and Friday, June 9 and 10, the community will have some landscaping improvement projects underway. First, the areas that are most bare or that get the most direct sun will be patched with Bermuda sod. Note that not all of the community will receive sod, only those areas that were deemed to have the greatest need on a community-wide evaluation by the landscaper and Landscape Committee.
Next, some plantings will be added to cover some more of the utility boxes. This is a continuation of a project the Landscape Committee came up with while determining ways to improve the neighborhood's appearance.
Finally, while we are greatly restricted as to the type of plantings we can put at the entrance to the gas line easement, we will be adding a bed to attempt to improve this area as much as possible. We hope you will enjoy the new additions. The Board and the Landscape Committee have put a lot of time into determining what projects should be undertaken and getting them done at an affordable price, so kudos to all the community volunteers helping to make Westhaven better!

Reminder - cables and other items in the common areas
Please be reminded that you are responsible for having your utility companies bury any wires for services they've installed for you. The association and its landscapers are not responsible for any cut wires. If they are not buried, they will most certainly be cut by the riding lawnmowers now that spring is upon us and mowing will be more frequent.
Also be reminded to keep your patio items on your property and out of the common areas. Frequent issues are caused by grills, patio furniture, planters, and rolling garbage bins/ recycling bins. Another issue we've seen is dog tie-out lines.
Note that you may not tie a dog outside unattended in Westhaven Townhomes. You must walk your pet on a leash and pick up after it. Thank you.

Additional dog station
The Board is adding another dog station (parking area "Z" / Harbor Haven area) to continue to make it easy for people to pick up after their dogs. Remember that if you see an unleashed dog or someone who is not picking up after his or her pet, please call Wake County Animal Control. If everyone follows the rules, the community will remain a pleasant and safe place for all. Thank you!
